Men who suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) and/or low testosterone (low libido) are more likely to experience sexual adverse effects than men who are not suffering from these conditions, according to a new study published in theJournal of the American Medical Association.
The study, which was presented at the American Society of Interventional Risk Managredients meeting in Chicago on Oct. 26, was conducted to test the hypothesis that patients with ED who took sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, had worse erectile function and reduced their risk of premature ejaculation.
The study, which involved more than 300 men aged 50 to 70, involved 18,000 participants, which was split into 2 groups — men who took the drug sildenafil, which was sold under the brand name Viagra, and men who didn’t take the drug.
The men who took sildenafil were less likely to experience premature ejaculation (33% of the group), while those on the drug were less likely to experience sexual adverse effects. The most common adverse effects were headaches, facial flushing, nasal congestion, and digestive issues.
In the sildenafil group, more men reported having sexual dysfunction than men on the drug. In addition, there were fewer men with sexual dysfunction in the sildenafil group — 36 percent versus 22 percent — than in the placebo group, and there were no significant differences in side effects between the groups. The study’s findings were consistent with previous research in which researchers found no difference in men’s sex drive or sexual satisfaction between the sildenafil users and the placebo users, and found no significant difference in the severity of ED.
“This study provides new evidence to support the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in treating ED,” said Dr. John A. C. McLeod, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and lead author of the study, which was published in the
A study of men ages 50 to 70, including the study’s participants, is ongoing, and they were randomly assigned to take sildenafil, which was sold under the brand name Viagra.
The study included a control group, which was assigned to take sildenafil, and a group of men who weren’t on any of the other medications, including Viagra and Revatio. The study found that the drug users who took sildenafil had a lower incidence of premature ejaculation than the men who didn’t take the drug. The drug users also reported more sexual dysfunction in the sildenafil group.
“This was the largest open-label study to date to examine the relationship between sildenafil use and premature ejaculation,” said C. Michael M. Smith, M. D., assistant professor of medicine at the University of Southern California, and co-lead author of the study, which was presented at the American Society of Interventional Risk Managredients meeting. “These results suggest that sildenafil may offer a new and safer treatment for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction, and that further research is needed to fully understand the association between sildenafil and sexual dysfunction.”
Men with ED are more likely to experience premature ejaculation, C. Michael Smith, M. D., assistant professor of medicine, told NBC News.
